London, 4 January 2021. Moon Lane are delighted to announce the opening of their first international franchise in Nanjing, China. The opening of the shop will be celebrated on the 20th of February 2021 along with a celebration of Dragon World, written by the founder and co owner of Moon Lane and published by Dorling Kindersley.

The development of the partnership with LinMind Cultural Development Co. Ltd., the franchisee operating Moon Lane Nanjing, began over two years ago when Tamara was invited to talk at the Fang Suo Bookshop Forum in Chengdu, a festival of innovation in international bookselling and publishing. Lu Shen, founder and owner of LinMind was a key part of the festival. The meeting between Tamara and Shen, and their shared passion for children’s cultural development, sparked the idea for a Moon Lane bookstore in Nanjing. The store will combine an exciting and carefully curated range of English language children’s books with the best of Chinese children’s books, celebrating a cross cultural conversation between the UK and China. Children’s books, at their best, offer a hopeful and inclusive view of different cultures, allowing the next generation to explore both what we all have in common alongside the fascinating differences between cultures and places.

“We are deeply honoured to have been chosen, from all the amazing bookshops in the world, to partner with LinMind in this exciting project. Extending our Moon Lane mission to raise equality in children’s books, beyond the UK and into international areas, is a hugely significant step for us. We hope to build on this with further partnerships in order to open more franchisees and create deeper cross-cultural understanding with other countries. I am also, personally, delighted that he opening of Moon Lane Nanjing has coincided with the publication of Dragon World. A book that explores the common existence of dragons in so many cultures around the world. To be able to celebrate these two events at the same time is extraordinarily fortunate.”

Tamara Macfarlane, founder and co-owner of Moon Lane

“It’s been a huge excitement and honour to work with Tamara and her Moon Lane team on this franchise project”. The idea was initiated two years ago when everything was business as usual. With the outbreak of pandemic almost everything was interrupted. Lockdown, self-isolation…became key words in our life. Changes, uncertainties, conflicts, racism, climate change…became emerging topics in the global agenda. Trust, respect and collective commitment have become far more important than ever. It is in such challenging times that the opening of Moon Lane in China is both valuable and meaningful. Moon Lane’s mission to promote equality and diversity in children’s reading will of course broaden the young generations’ horizons in both China and the UK.

Lu Shen, founder and owner of LiMind

J“We are so thrilled to be working alongside Tamara to publish Dragon World. Tamara’s passion and enthusiasm really bring the subject to life. We’re so proud of the book and all her outstanding work at Moon Lane – and are very excited for this next chapter.”

James Mitchem, Acquisitions Editor at Dorling Kindersley, UK
